Southern Pacific No. 4400 was a class GS-1 4-8-4 "Northern" Type steam locomotive built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in May 1930 for the Southern Pacific railroad. It entered service on August 23, 1930. It was arguably the first 4-8-4 ordered by the SP. It was built for passenger service, which it had done for much of its career.
It was loaned to the Texas and New Orleans (an SP subsidiary) as No. 708 from 1943 to 1952. It was returned to the SP as No. 4470 in March 1953 and renumbered back to No. 4400 in July of that year.
The locomotive was retired on March 23, 1954 and scrapped.
