Southern Pacific No. 2873 is an EMD GP9 built by the Electro-Motive Division for the Southern Pacific Railroad in December 1956.

History

Southern Pacific No. 2873 was manufactured in December 1956 by the Electro-Motive Division, and it was delivered to Southern Pacific's subsidiary known as Texas and New Orleans where it was first numbered by the Texas and New Orleans as #443.

It was then passed onto the Southern Pacific Railroad and renumbered from T&NO #443 to SP #2873

In December 1983, the Southern Pacific Railroad and the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway had attempted a merger that would create the SPSF Merger. However, in July 1986, the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) had blocked the merger due to opposition by the US Department of Justice.

No. 2873 was repainted from one of Southern Pacific's original liveries into the SPSF "Kodachrome" livery.

It was retired in 1992 and donated to the Western Pacific Railroad Museum where it currently resides today.
