The locomotive was retired from service in March 1956 and moved to the Yolo County Fairgrounds in 1957.
In June 1982, restoration efforts began, and by spring 1989, 1233 returned to service on the Yolo Shortline. It made several test runs out of Woodland in April 1996 and was prepared for a special run in October 1997. The locomotive was reassembled and returned to static display in June 1999. As of 2024, it remains on static display in Woodland, California.
