The Southern Pacific Classes EF636LR-1, EF636R-2 and EF636LR-3 (also known as the Southern Pacific Class EF636-1, EF636-2, EF636-3, EF636-4, EF636-5 and the EF636-6) were a class of EMD SD45, EMD SD45R and EMD SD40M-2 diesel locomotives built by the Electro-Motive Division (EMD) for the Southern Pacific Railroad between 1966 and 1970.
History[]
In all, a total of 317 members of the class were ever built by the for the Electro-Motive Division (EMD) between 1966 and 1970 and they were all delivered to the Southern Pacific Railroad that same year they were constructed, there was a total of six classes of EMD SD45 locomotives, which were classes EF636-1, EF636-2, EF636-3, EF636-4, EF636-5 and EF636-6, with 44 examples of the class EF636-1, 90 examples of the class EF636-2, 29 examples of the class EF636-3, 69 examples of the class EF636-4, 35 examples of the class EF636-5 and 48 examples of the class EF636-6.
When the year 1984 had came, the Southern Pacific Railroad had been rebuilt and grouped the six classes of locomotives into what had eventually became the Southern Pacific Classes EF636LR-1, EF636R-2 and EF636LR-3 and they were all rebuilt as EMD SD45R locomotives with the "R" denoting they were rebuilt from EMD SD45 locomotives and some were rebuilt into EMD SD40M-2 locomotives, while one locomotive #8837 was rebuilt into the Southern Pacific's very own SD44R #7399.
Accidents and Incidents[]
- Southern Pacific #8805 (later renumbered to 7403) was involved in a wreck that occurred in 1995 that had occurred over at Acoma, Nevada.
- Southern Pacific #8814 was involved a wreck in October 1978 that had occurred over at Santa Margarita, California.
- Southern Pacific #8985 (later renumbered to 7551) was involved in the infamous 1989 Cajon Pass Runaway on May 12, 1989.
