The Southern Pacific Class GS-8 (ex-Cotton Belt Class L1) is a class of 4-8-4 built by the Pine Bluff Shops for the Cotton Belt Route, as Cotton Belt L1s but would be later leased to the Southern Pacific where they would be classified as GS-8.

History

During the Second World War, the Southern Pacific needed more motive power to tackle the issues throughout the Second World War, the Cotton Belt Route decided to make an agreement with the Southern Pacific to lease four of their own Class L1 4-8-4s to the Southern Pacific Railroad, this resulted in what would be come the Southern Pacific Class GS-8.

Sadly, none were four Southern Pacific Class GS-8s preserved, they were all withdrawn from service and scrapped. However, all that is left from the Cotton Belt Route Class L1 and Southern Pacific Class GS-8s/ex-Cotton Belt Route Class L1 is one Cotton Belt Route Class L1 from Cotton Belt Route, and that is Cotton Belt No. 819.
