The Southern Pacific Class GS-7 (ex-Cotton Belt Class L-1) is a class of 4-8-4 built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works for the Cotton Belt Route, as Cotton Belt L1s but would be later leased to the Southern Pacific where they would be classified as GS-7.
History[]
During the Second World War, the Southern Pacific needed more motive power to tackle the issues throughout the Second World War, the Cotton Belt Route decided to make an agreement with the Southern Pacific to lease six of their own Class L1 4-8-4s to the Southern Pacific Railroad, this resulted in what would become the Southern Pacific Class GS-7.
Sadly, none were six Southern Pacific Class GS-7s preserved, they were all withdrawn from service and scrapped. However, all that is left from the Cotton Belt Route Class L1 and Southern Pacific Class GS-7s/ex-Cotton Belt Route Class L1 is one Cotton Belt Route Class L1 from Cotton Belt Route, and that is Cotton Belt No. 819.
