The Southern Pacific Class ES615R-1 was a class of 43 EMD SD7 diesel locomotives built by the Electro-Motive Division (EMD) for the Southern Pacific Railroad between 1951 and 1953.

History[]

Between 1951 and 1953, the Electro-Motive Division (EMD) had been built 43 EMD SD7 diesel locomotives for the Southern Pacific Railroad between 1951 and 1953, when these locomotives arrived on the Southern Pacific Railroad after they were constructed by the Electro-Motive Division (EMD), they were first numbered as 5279-5293 and 5308-5335 respectively, but in 1965, they would all be renumbered to 2700-2742 respectively, in 1974, all 43 would be renumbered again this time they were renumbered to 1400-1442.

Between 1979 and 1980, the Southern Pacific Railroad had introduced their General Rehabilitation and Improvement Program (G.R.I.P) process following the success of the Illinois Central Railroad's and the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway (Santa Fe)'s Rebuild programs. This resulted in all 43 SD7s being rebuilt into SD7Rs with the R denoting they were rebuilds.

The entire class was retired from active service during the final days of the Southern Pacific before Southern Pacific along with its parent company Rio Grande Industries would merge to Union Pacific.
