The Southern Pacific AC-10 was the largest class of 4-8-8-2 cab forward steam locomotives ordered by Southern Pacific Railroad.

History[]

40 of these engines were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works between January–July 1942 for the Southern Pacific system and were numbered 4205 – 4244. The first AC-10, No. 4205, entered service on February 17, 1942, and the last, No. 4244, on August 19, 1942.

They were used for both freight and passenger service on the Southern Pacific system, the design of this and the previous AC classes proved so successful for SP that the railroad began placing orders for the AC-10's successors, the AC-11s, while Baldwin Locomotive Works was still busy building and delivering the AC-10s.

Southern Pacific used these locomotives for about fifteen years, with the first retirements of this class occurring on April 5, 1955 and the last on September 24th, 1958. The locomotives were scrapped soon after they were retired, with the last one, No. 4243, scrapped on August 7, 1959. No surviving examples of this class were preserved with the small exception of the tender from No. 4219 which now serves as an Auxiliary water tender for Southern Pacific No. 4449 during excursion trains.
