Soo Line No. 2500 is an EMD F7A diesel-electric locomotive that was built by General Motors’ Electro-Motive Division in November, 1949. It was originally constructed as a demonstrator unit to be taken on promotional tours before it was purchased by the St. Paul & St. Louis Railroad (Soo Line). It was used to pull “The Laker” passenger train from Duluth to southern Wisconsin and Chicago during its run revenue service.
No. 2500 was withdrawn in 1986 and was subsequently donated to the Lake Superior Railroad Museum. The exterior was restored and repainted, and mechanical restoration was completed in the spring of 1995. It has continued to operate at the museum ever since.
