Sierra Railroad #34 is a 2-8-2 Mikado that worked on the Sierra Railroad along with #3 and #28

History[]

34 was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in September 1925 for the Sierra Railroad to haul heavy freight trains from Jamestown to Toulomne, California. For 5 years, this 2-8-2 was the biggest engine on the Sierra's roster until 36 was purchased from the American Locomotive Company in 1930. However, 36 proved to be too heavy for the Sierra track, leaving 34 ahead in the game. In March 1955, the Sierra Railroad purchased 2 Baldwin diesels, leaving 34 and the other Sierra steamers out of work. However, it was about to enter a new career in excursions and movies. In 1962, 34 was sold to Reed Hatch who leased it to the Sierra for excursion work. #34 last operated on May 21, 1980. In 1987, 34 was sold to Fred Kepner. Today 34 sits in the Jamestown roundhouse awaiting restoration.
