Sierra Railway No. 38 is a 2-6-6-2 "Mallet" type steam locomotive that was built in 1934 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works for Weyerhaeuser Timber Company, as their #4 at the Klamath Falls, Oregon operation. When Weyerhaeuser began retiring their steam locomotives, it was sold to the Sierra Railway and renumbered to #38 in 1952.

After just three years of operation at the Sierra, it was sold to Rayonier Incorporated in 1955, and moved to their Grays Harbor, Washington main line, where it worked hauling log trains. Despite being one of the stars of Rayonier's "End of an Era" film announcing the end of steam locomotive operations in March 1962, #38 continued to operated there as backup for the new diesels until February 1967, when it was actually retired. It was refurbished and placed in display at Rayonier's Crane Creek log yard (near Lake Quinault, WA) in 1969.

When the log yard was closed in 1984, Rayonier was unable to find any takers, so #38 was offered for scrap. A private collector persuaded Rayonier to give him the lokey if he would get it moved off their site. It was disassembled and moved to southern Oregon, where it sat idle and in pieces until the collection was transferred by his estate to the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad, which has moved it to their shops for restoration.
