The Shinano Railway Class 1 is a Japanese DC electric locomotive operated by the Shinano Railway and later other railway companies since 1926.
History[]
The Class 1 is an early electric locomotive used in Japan. Operated by the Shinano Railway, the preceding operator of a section of track on what is now the East Japan Railway Company's Ōito Line, three locomotives were manufactured between 1926 and 1927. The locomotives's mechanical equipment was manufactured by Baldwin Locomotive Works and their electrical equipment by Westinghouse; Baldwin also manufactured a number of similar locomotives for other smaller railway companies.
With the Shinano Railway's nationalization in 1937, the locomotives were acquired by the Japanese National Railways, reclassified as the JNR Class ED22 and renumbered ED22 1 through ED22 3. ED22 1 was leased to the Ohmi Railway in 1948; the railway officially bought ED22 1 in 1950, becoming their first electric locomotive. Given the new number of ED1, the locomotive was renumbered back to ED22 1 in 1955. ED22 1 was transferred to the Ichibata Electric Railway in 1960 with the increase of electric locomotives on the Ohmi Railway; used for freight operations, the locomotive was transferred to the Kōnan Railway in 1974 with the discontinuation of freight services on the Ichibata Electric Railway. ED22 1 remains in service with the Kōnan Railway, being used mainly for snow clearing operations.
ED22 2 was loaned to the Sangi Railway in June 1955; the locomotive was sold to the railway in 1956. Used for switching duties at Tomita Station, the locomotive was withdrawn from service on 26 August 1984; it is currently on static display at Nishi-Fujiwara Station. ED22 3 was withdrawn in 1956 and loaned to the Gakunan Railway before being loaned to the Seibu Railway, where it was classified as their Class A1 locomotive. The locomotive was transferred to the Matsumoto Electric Railway (now Alpico Kōtsū) in August 1960 and reclassified as their Class ED30 locomotive and renumbered ED301; it would remain in service until September 2005 after a number of voltage changes. It is currently on static display at Niimura Station.
Specifications[]
The Class 1 used a nose suspension drive system. MT37 traction motors were used on the locomotives. Regenerative braking was fitted on the locomotives.
