The Seibu 9000 series is a Japanese suburban commuter electric multiple unit operated by the Seibu Railway since September 1993.
History[]
The 9000 series trains were designed as a type of 10-car train with four doors per side for use on the Ikebukuro Line. A total of eight 10-car sets were manufactured by Seibu's Tokorozawa Works between 1993 and 1999; these were the last trains manufactured by the Tokorozawa Works before its closure in June 2000 and were the last "yellow trains" manufactured for Seibu. The trains entered service on 23 September 1993, initially as ten-car sets.
With the introduction of the 40000 series sets in 2017, the 9000 series were relegated for use on the Tamako Line. As of 2022 five sets remain in operation, all four cars long, on the Tamako Line.
Design[]
The 9000 series sets use a curved front end with mid-mounted headlights in circular casings protruding slightly from the body. The bodies are painted yellow with silver accents; these were Seibu's last "yellow trains". The bodies are based on the bodies of the New 2000 series sets.
Specifications[]
Construction is of steel; the sets feature unpainted stainless steel doors. When initially produced the sets used mechanicals and traction motors from scrapped 101 series trains; these were later changed to Hitachi IGBT drives which produce a shrieking noise during a refurbishment carried out from 2003 to 2007.
