The Seibu 2000 and New 2000 series are Japanese suburban commuter electric multiple units operated by the Seibu Railway since 1977.
History[]
The 2000 series trains were designed as a type train with four doors per side for use on the Seibu network. The sets were introduced on the Shinjuku Line on all-stop services on the line in 1977; these were the first Seibu trains to feature four doors a side since the 401 series introduced in 1956, as well as the first Seibu trains to break the "x01 series" naming trend. A total of 122 cars were manufactured by Seibu's Tokorozawa Works from 1977 to 1988.
An improved version of the 2000 series sets was introduced in April 1988, named the New 2000 series sets; these feature a slightly different fascia and were intended to replace the aging 411 and 701 series sets. The vast majority of New 2000 series cars were manufactured by the Tokorozawa Works, with the rest manufactured by Tokyu Car Corporation. These are mainly used on the Ikebukuro and Shinjuku Lines. Refurbishment of the sets has been taking place since 1996.
Design[]
The 2000 series sets use a curved front end with mid-mounted headlights in circular casings protruding slightly from the body. The bodies are painted yellow with silver accents. Both the 2000 and New 2000 series sets feature slight differences in their front fascias.
Cab variations[]
Specifications[]
Construction is of steel; the sets feature unpainted stainless steel doors. When initially produced the sets used resistor-controlled traction motors; later sets featured field chopper-controlled traction motors. New 2000 series sets feature field chopper-controlled traction motors, although later build sets feature Mitsubishi GTO variable frequency drives which produce a whining sound.
