The Schinenzeppelin (Rail Zeppelin) was an experimental railcar meant to represent a zeppelin. It was designed and built by German Aircraft engineer Franz Kruckenberg in 1929. The engine was neither steam or diesel, and was propelled by a large propeller at the back of the engine, as well as petroleum. This allowed the railcar to accelerate to 230.2 km/h (143 MPH) Setting a world speed record for a petroleum powered vehicle. Only one Rail Zeppelin was ever built. It was taken out of service in 1939 for safety concerns, and scrapped shortly afterwards to provide material for the warplanes in World War 2.
