ATSF No. 5011 is a 2-10-4 "Texas" type locomotive built in 1944 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works.
History[]
ATSF 5011 is owned by the Museum Of Transportation in St. Louis, Missouri, where it remains on static display. You can even climb onto the footplate of the engine by way of a staircase and ring the bell, the only part of the locomotive still in use.
Trivia[]
- Confusingly, although the AT&SF's 2-10-2s, as well as those of other railroads but the IC (which called them "Centrals", were known as "Santa Fes" as they pioneered this wheel arrangement, they were known officially by the AT&SF (and to a greater extent, SP) crews as "Decapods" or "Decks", and the 2-10-4s were in turn known as the "Santa Fes" whereas other railroads called them "Texas" types and the CB&Q "Colorados".
- The locomotive's bell probably once got confused with the sound of a singing bowl.
