Atsf1035

Santa Fe (ATSF) No. 1035 was a 2-6-2 "Prairie" type steam locomotive built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1901 for the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway.

On July the 13th, 1951, 1035 - along with Mikados 3167 and 4076 - were among ten Santa Fe steamers, all awaiting scrap at ATSF's Topeka railroad shops. The locomotives were moved over to the adjacent railroad bridge over the Kaw (Kansas) River, to keep the bridge from washing out during the intense flooding of the river that year.

Two of the five spans of the bridge ended up being weakened and gave way, taking the three aforementioned locomotives with them. When the floods subsided, they were left in situ as steam was already being phased out in numbers at the time.

During the mid-1950s, 1035 and 3167 were partially revealed submerged in sand just east of the renewed bridge during low tides, and Santa Fe workers salvaged what parts they could from them. Occasional sightings of 1035 have continued to come up over the years, but no serious recovery operation has ever been put forward due to lack of feasible justification. Fortunately, 15 of 1035's sisters survive today in multiple museums
