Locomotive Wiki

The SR Q1 Class Bulleid is a type of 0-6-0 steam locomotive designed by Oliver Bulleid for use during wartime on the Southern Railway network.

History[]

They were built in 1942 by the Brighton Locomotive Works and the Ashford Locomotive Works for service in the British Royal Military during World War II as a special-duty mixed traffic engine used and ordered by the Southern Railway. They were also proven to achieve a record speed of 50 MPH driving backward, which actually proved them to be better at traveling "tender first" rather than slowly accelerating forward.

Only 40 were built, but survived as spare units on British Railways after the "Big Four" no longer became existent into the end of the steam era.

Preservation[]

Only one known example is preserved at the National Railway Museum in York, England in the UK, which is No. 33001, and is also the last in existence. Originally built for the Southern Railway as their No. C1, it remained in revenue service with British Railways until it was officially retired in 1964 and initially sent for scrapping, but thankfully, it was later moved to the Bluebell Railway in Uckfield, England sometime in the 1970s. After a few operations on excursion trains there, No. C1 has since become a common sight at the National Railway Museum where it has remained on indoor static display as part of the National Collection.
