The J151 (Contract J151) is a Singaporean rapid transit electric multiple unit scheduled to be operated by the Singapore Mass Rapid Transit from 2027 on the Jurong Region Line.

History[]

The J151s are intended for use on the Jurong Region Line and are the first rolling stock to be used on that line. Built by Hyundai Rotem in Changwon, South Korea, the J151s are scheduled to be delivered from 2024 onwards and will undergo testing before the line opens in stages from 2027. A total of 62 sets were ordered.

The first set, 3001, was constructed in 2023 and was spotted being delivered in May 2023. The sets are slated to be operated by SRJV, a consortium between SBS Transit and RATP Dev, the overseas arm of RATP Group.

Design[]

Car bodies are constructed of welded aluminum. The sets are painted in a unique livery, featuring a white body and incorporating teal in many places to reflect the line's color on the map. The design features a sleek modern look similar to European electric multiple units of the time, featuring sharply angled headlights. The Land Transport Authority's logo is emblazoned on the front of the detrainment doors as well as the sides of the cars. A warm orange LED display on the top left of the cab cars shows the train's running number. The cab's appearance is reminiscent of a water droplet.

In early artist's impressions, the trains had a significantly different appearance as well as a significantly different livery. In these early impressions the train was significantly boxier and featured triangular headlights, with the cab streamlined forwards and contouring backwards. These initial renders had the train feature a predominantly white livery with a single thin teal accent stripe down the sides of the cars with a black band around the top half of the cars. The Land Transport Authority's logo remained on the detrainment doors.

The sets's design is overseen by Spanish design consultancy DIARADESIGN.

Specifications[]

The J151s are a type of fully-automated rolling stock on the Singapore rapid transit network. Siemens's Trainguard Sirius CBTC system is used to control the trains. The trains are equipped with variable frequency drives. Hyundai Rotem will tap on existing suppliers of components and systems currently used by other rolling stock to ensure greater parts commonality.
