Locomotive Wiki

This article show the different steam locomotive classes the SNCF had had.

Numbering system[]

After the creation of the Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Français. It was important for the new Railway entity to adopt a numbering system that allow to identify locomotives and differenciate them easily.

In 1939, It had been decided to adopt the PLM numbering system for every French steam locomotives. However some modifications would be bring as It would have been inunfficient with numerous locomotives classes.

To understand the SNCF numbering system, It is important to know, that after the nationalization of the French Railways, the SNCF was divided in 5 regions, with their borders identical to the one of the former companies, for their biggest part. Each SNCF regions received a number to identidy It:

  • (1) Eastern (ex-AL and Est combined);
  • (2) Northern (ex-Nord);
  • (3) Western (ex-État);
  • (4) Southwestern (ex-PO-Midi);
  • (5) Southeastern (ex-PLM).

A sixth region would be created in 1947, with the purpose to dicrease the Southwestern and Southeastern regions, which were too gigantic to operte them as regions. This sixth region, which received the no. 6, would be the Mediterranean Region. And would count in Its effectives, ex-PLM and Midi locomotives.

These numbers would be applied on the locomotives bufferbean to indicate the region of which they were owned. The pre-grouping SNCF steam locomotives were identified on the regional level. Two locomotives of different regions could have the same number and to avoid confusion, the region’s number is used to help to identified them.

The SNCF number for steam locomotives was separated in three distinct part:

  • A three digital number which indicate the axle arrangement of the locomotive. For exemple a 4-6-2 Pacific would be a 2-3-1, or just 231 as It is written in France. An articulated locomotive would have two three digital numbers with a "+" between them. For exemple a 020+020, would
  • A letter which identicate the class of the locomotive with a specific axle arrangement. The letter is attributed on a chronological logic. Exemple: the first class of Pacific locomotives would formed the class 231.A, the second coming chronologicaly would formed the class 231.B. Sometimes, locomotives from a class after receiving some modifications would formed a new class depending or many, depending of their modifications, they would received the following letter. The letters A to N, are used for the pre-grouping SNCF locomotives, the letters P to U, designated the SNCF standardized steam locomotives, the letter W for the British steam locomotives of the War Department, and the letter X to Z for the German steam locomotives captured during WWII. The letters I, O were not used to prevent confusion with the numbers 0 and 1, the letter T had a specific use as It indicated a tank locomotive. Exemple: 141.TA. And the letter V was not used because of Its resemblance with the letter U. When a locomotive moved to another region, It kept Its class letter, if It wasn’t used by another class. If the locomotive shared Its letter class with another class of locomotives, new letters were applied depending of hiw old the two class are. In rare cases, when two appeared the same year, they can share the same letter.
  • A another number specific to each locomotives. In general the SNCF regios reused the three last number of the locomotive's previous number before nationalization, with the exception of the Northern Region would renumbered Its engines from no. 1.
