The T251 (Contract Turnkey 251) is a Singaporean rapid transit electric multiple unit operated by the Singapore Mass Rapid Transit since January 2020 on the Thomson-East Coast Line.

History[]

The T251s were produced for use on the Thomson-East Coast Line and are the first rolling stock to be used on that line. The trains are built by CRRC Qingdao Sifang in Qingdao, China, and is also responsible for final fitting and assembly. Kawasaki oversees the project and is involved in design, manufacture of bogies and procurement of major components; a local subsidiary of Kawasaki is responsible for the trains's delivery and on-site testing. The first train was delivered in July 2018, with service commencing in January 2020. All trains have been delivered as of 2022, but not all are in service as portions of the line still remain under construction.

An additional batch of seven sets was slated to be procured for use between the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System; this option was ultimately not pursued to reduce costs and as a result the additional seven sets were not built.

Design[]

Car bodies are constructed of welded aluminum. The sets are equipped with the corporate livery of the Land Transport Authority; the livery features a white body with the colors of the line the trains serve on the sides, in this case, brown for the Thomson-East Coast Line, as well as an additional yellow accent stripe. The Land Transport Authority logo can be seen on the sides of the cab cars, with a glossy black band running along the top half of each car. The fronts of each of the cabs is mostly black with the two accent lines spreading down towards the front headlights. The SMRT roundel can be seen near the front of each car. A yellow LED display at the top left of the train displays the train running number.

The original artist's impression of the T251 featured a significantly different design. The white body was retained, but a large green accent band ran the top half of the train, split in the middle by a matte black band. Their general design was more similar to that of the C151Bs that were also being built around that time, featuring a "T"-shaped gap in the pilot and dual sets of headlights.

The interior of the sets features grab handles that match the seat colors of the cars; reserved seats are in different colors for each car. Tip-up seats are present, intended to increase standing space in times of congestion. This feature is rarely used. The sets feature the Train Traveller Information System, a series of LED screens mounted in each car informing passengers of route information, and the Dynamic Route Map Display, a large LCD screen acting as a route map. A rectangular yellow LED beacon, positioned above each door, flashes slowly when the doors are about to close.

The T251s are the first fully-automated rolling stock on the SMRT network manufactured by Kawasaki Heavy Industries. Alstom's URBALIS 400 CBTC system is used to control the trains. The trains are equipped with Mitsubishi's MAP-124-75V298 variable frequency drive system based on a hybrid of silicon carbide MOSFET and IGBT elements; these produce a hissing sound on acceleration.
