The R151 (Contract R151) is a Singaporean rapid transit electric multiple unit operated by the Singapore Mass Rapid Transit since June 2023 on the North-South and East-West Lines and the Changi Airport Extension.

History[]

The R151s are the seventh generation of rapid transit trains to be used on Singapore's overground rapid transit lines. The sets were procured as part of an asset renewal program for both lines, with Bombardier winning the contract for production of 66 trains to replace the 66 C151s in service. This contract was later expanded to add an additional 40 trains in September 2020 to replace the 19 C651s and 21 C751Bs in service, bringing the total order to 106 trains. Alstom would later acquire Bombardier's rail business in 2021.

The first two trains, 805/806 and 807/808 arrived in Singapore in February 2022, with the rest progressively delivered. The R151 entered service on 4 June 2023, with set 825/826 operating on the East-West Line; 16 trains were stated to be in operation by end-2023. The R151 began operation on the North-South Line on 25 May 2024, with 839/840 entering service during the afternoon.

Design[]

The sets are made of an aluminum alloy. The sets are equipped with a variation of the corporate livery of the Land Transport Authority; the livery features a white body with a black band stretching the top half of each car, with two bands with the colors of the train's intended lines on the top and bottom adding color to each of the bands. The Land Transport Authority logo can be seen on the sides of the cab cars. The SMRT roundel can be seen near the front of each train, just behind and below the driver's door. The front badging of the car features the Land Transport Authority's logo as opposed to the SMRT logo used on previous trains. A yellow LED display at the top right of the train cab displays the train running number.

In early artist's impressions, the Bombardier logo was prominently displayed on the cab in a polished "plate" contoured to the shape of the cab. The livery shown in early impressions was also slightly different, mirroring the livery as seen on the C151C locomotives before this was changed in later renders.

The interior of the trains feature the Dynamic Route Map Display, a full-color LCD route map, as well as a full-color passenger information display; the map display is based on AMI hardware. The sets also feature perch seats. Depending on the car, each car features red, blue or green seats. A red LED strip above each door turns on when the doors are open and flashes slowly when the doors are closing.

Early artist's impressions of the interior featured tip-up seats; these were dropped in favor of the perch seats.

Onboard recording

The R151s are the first trains on the system to use Dellner couplers. The sets use Alstom's MITRAC TC1500 traction system based on silicon carbide MOSFETs; this makes the train produce a hissing sound on acceleration.
