The C851E (Contract 851E) is a Singaporean rapid transit electric multiple unit scheduled to be operated by the Singapore Mass Rapid Transit from 2026 on the Circle Line.
History[]
The C851Es were produced for use on the Circle Line, produced to further increase the capacity of the line with the projected increase in demand once the Marina Bay-HarbourFront extension opens in 2026. The trains are being built by Alstom since 2022 at their facilities in Barcelona, Spain.
865, the first set to be delivered, underwent testing at the Singapore Rail Testing Center in 2023.
Design[]
Car bodies are constructed of welded aluminum. The sets are equipped with a variation on the corporate livery of the Land Transport Authority, having a white body with a large glossy black band spanning the top half of each car. Emblazoned on the bottom half, separated by the plain white body, is a large band indicating the line the trains serve, which in this case is a yellowish-orange for the Circle Line. The SMRT roundel is branded in red print on the front of each car, just behind the cab, with large Land Transport Authority logos emblazoned on the detrainment doors and the sides of each car.
In terms of appearance, the C851Es have a nearly identical appearance to that of the C851Es purchased for the North East Line under the same contract, both built around the same time by Alstom. The sets are visually identical to the older C830Cs apart from their liveries.
Internally, the C851Es feature different Train Traveller Information System displays compared to the C830s and C830Cs, featuring a wider and bold font, white door panels and grab handles which match the seat colors of each car. The route map used on the C851Es is the Dynamic Route Map Display, featuring sets of LEDs to inform travelers of their destination. A yellow beacon above the door flashes when the doors are about to close.
Specifications[]
The C851Es are a type of fully-automated rolling stock on the Singapore rapid transit network. Alstom's URBALIS 300 CBTC system is used to control the trains. The trains are equipped with Alstom's Opt-ONiX IGBT variable frequency drive system. The Opt-ONiX system was developed specifically by Alstom for the Chinese market. The systems used are identical, if not very similar, to what is used on the C830C.
The trains are fitted with condition monitoring systems to allow them to gather data from their onboard equipment, allowing maintenance crews to carry out predictive maintenance when required. Additionally, the trains are also fitted with contact shoe sensors; this allows maintenance crews to take action if the shoe is dislodged or sheared off.
