The C801A (Contract 801A) is a Singaporean automated people mover operated by the Singapore Mass Rapid Transit since November 2014 on the Bukit Panjang LRT Line.

History[]

The C801As were produced for use on the Bukit Panjang LRT Line and are the second type of rolling stock to be used on that line; the cars were procured to boost the capacity of the Bukit Panjang LRT Line. The trains were built from 2014 to 2015 by Bombardier Transportation at their plant in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania. The first train was delivered in June 2014, with operations commencing in November the same year.

Two cars were shipped to New Jersey for installation of new signal equipment in 2019; these were shipped back in 2021. The rest of the cars will have their equipment installation done locally.

Design[]

Car bodies are constructed of aluminum. The sets are painted in the "Pixels" corporate livery of the SMRT Corporation, consisting of a white body with yellow, black and red accent lines and squares in the same colors resembling pixels. SMRT Corporation's logo is emblazoned on the sides and the front of the cars. These are the first trains to be so equipped with the "Pixels" paintscheme.

Compared to the older C801s, the C801As feature a more streamlined appearance and feature LED headlights and taillights in circular casings. Additions compared to the older C801s include a bright orange indicator on each car which illuminates when the doors are open and windscreen wipers. Each train features smart glass which tints in range of public housing for privacy reasons.

The C801As are the second generation of automated people movers used on the Singapore's rail transit network; despite sporting a significantly more modern appearance, mechanically these trains are identical to the older C801 trains. Bombardier's CITYFLO 550 fixed block system is used to control the trains, although this system is slated to be upgraded to Alstom's CITYFLO 650 CBTC system in the future. The trains are equipped with a Bombardier thyristor drive system powering Bombardier 1460-P4 traction motors, causing a "spooling up" sound as the train accelerates.
