The C151C (Contract 151C) is a Singaporean rapid transit electric multiple unit operated by the Singapore Mass Rapid Transit since September 2018 on the North South and East West Lines and the Changi Airport Extension.

History[]

The C151Cs were constructed to supplement the existing fleet of trains to increase the capacity of the lines they serve. SMRT Corporation took delivery of the first two sets in October 2017, with the first sets entering service on 30 September 2018, with 701/702 and 703/704 in service; 703/704 would be recalled back to its depot after intermittent issues. CRRC Qingdao Sifang handled manufacturing while Kawasaki oversaw the project and design of these locomotives.

Despite being designed for service on both the North South and East West Lines, the trains are mainly seen on the North South Line and very rarely, if ever, serve the East West Line.

Design[]

The sets are made of a double-skinned aluminum alloy, similar to that of the Hitachi A-Train. The sets are equipped with the corporate livery of the Land Transport Authority, the first train to be so equipped; the livery features a white body with the colors of the lines the trains serve on the sides, in this case, red and green for the North-South and East-West Lines respectively. The Land Transport Authority logo can be seen on the sides of the cab cars, with a matte black band running along the top half of each car. The SMRT roundel can be seen near the front of each car. The front badging of the car features the Land Transport Authority's logo as opposed to the SMRT logo used on previous trains.

The sets are the second and last sets to be fitted with the STARiS 2.0 route map system, a set of two LCD monitors running the Android OS displaying station and route information. These are the first trains on the Singapore rail network to be fitted with tip-up seats, intended to increase standing space in times of congestion. This feature is rarely used. The locomotives are also fitted with a new type of collector shoe, which sends critical information to the train system if sheared off. A rectangular red LED beacon, positioned above each door, flashes slowly when the doors are about to close.

The sets feature a rectangular window on the driver's door on the inside of the train to allow passengers to see the tracks ahead. This window is usually blocked by newspapers (or similar pieces of paper) taped to the window itself due to security reasons. This feature would be dropped for all subsequent trains.

Essentially a derivative of the C151A design (and by extension the older C751B design), the C151C is equipped with the same Fuji Electric 2-level IGBT traction system; these provide a whining sound on acceleration.
