The C151B (Contract 151B) is a Singaporean rapid transit electric multiple unit operated by the Singapore Mass Rapid Transit since April 2017 on the North-South and East-West Lines and the Changi Airport Extension.

History[]

The C151Bs were constructed to supplement the existing fleet of trains to increase the capacity of the lines they serve, as well as to cope with the projected increase in demand. SMRT Corporation took delivery of the first two sets in April 2015, with the first sets entering service on 16 April 2017. CSR Qingdao Sifang handled manufacturing while Kawasaki oversaw the project and design of these locomotives.

Design[]

The sets are made of a double-skinned aluminum alloy, similar to that of the Hitachi A-Train. The sets are equipped with SMRT's "Pixels" livery, featuring a white body with black, yellow and red square pixel designs on the sides. These were the second trains to feature this livery, after the C801B light rail vehicles and before the C651s which underwent a now-aborted refurbishment. The original artist's impression of the sets shows them with SMRT's old "Blackbird" livery, featuring a matte black body with a red side stripe and white cab ends. The run numbers are displayed using a bright orange LED display on the top right of the cab front.

The C151B is the first train on Singapore's rapid transit network to be fitted with an LCD route map, named STARiS 2.0, as well as electronically-actuated doors as opposed to pneumatic-operated doors. The STARiS 2.0 system consists of two LCD monitors and is based on the Android OS; each route map is positioned over each door. These are also fitted with a new Thales SelTrac moving block signaling system, the first trains on the network to be so fitted from new. A rectangular red LED beacon, positioned above each door, flashes slowly when the doors are about to close.

Sets 671/672 through 689/690 feature a rectangular window on the driver's door on the inside of the train to allow passengers to see the tracks ahead. Due to security reasons, the windows are usually blocked by newspapers taped to the window itself.

Essentially a derivative of the C151A design (and by extension the older C751B design), the C151B is equipped with the same Fuji Electric 2-level IGBT traction system; these provide a whining sound on acceleration.
