No.133 is a green 2-8-2 diesel mechanical locomotive.

History[]

No.133 was built by Hudswell Clarke and company of Leeds, Yorkshire, England in the United Kingdom in 1959 for the Sierra Leone Government Railway in West Africa as part of their 120 class diesels. No.133 was originally supplied with a Paxman YHXL mk3 diesel mechanical engine and a Vulcan Sinclair Dual Fluidrive transmission with a final reduction gearbox from Bostock and Bramley.[1][2][3][4][5][6]

Later in it's life No.133 was re-engined with a Gardner 8L3 diesel engine which it operated with until it's withdrawal in 1975 when the railway closed. After which No.133 was stored at the back of the Cline town carriage workshops along with other surviving pieces of rolling stock to prevent their scrapping.[1][2][3][4][5][6]

However it was feared that No.133 along with the rest of the rolling stock had been scrapped during the Sierra Leonean civil war from 1991 to 2002. However a British Army officer Colonel Steve Davies visited the workshops and found that the collection was still intact though slightly abashed as the works had been used for a refugee camp of sorts during the war.[1][2][3][4][5][6]

With help from the workshops owner and support from the Sierra Leone government and the National Railway museum of the United Kingdom they established the Sierra Leone National Railway Museum (SLNRM) in 2005. Currently No.133 is on display having been restored and still carries it's Gardner 8L3 diesel engine.[1][2][3][4][5][6]

Trivia[]
