No.105 is a green 0-8-0 mainline diesel locomotive.

History[]

No.105 was built in 1959 by Hudswell Clarke and company for 2 foot 6 inch narrow gauge Sierra Leone Government Railway (SLR/SLGR) as part of their 101 class diesels. No.105 was withdrawn from service upon the closure of the SLR in 1975. It was locked up at the back of the Cline Carriage Works in Freetown (the capital of Sierra Leone) among seventeen other pieces of rolling stock including sibling No.107.[1][2][3][4]

The collection was feared to have been lost during the Sierra Leonean Civil War from 1991 to 2002 during which the workshops were used as a "refuge camp". After the war Colonel Steve Davies located the works and with permission of it's owner and support from the Sierra Leonean government founded the Sierra Leone National Railway Museum in 2005. No.105 has been restored to static condition and is one of the main exhibits in the museum.[1][2][3][4]

Trivia[]

  • No.105 along with sibling No.107 are the only known diesels of their kind left in the world.
