The Eb 3/5 was a high-pressure locomotive from the Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works (SLM) that was built for experimental purposes, similar to the LMS No. 6399 "Fury" (at 1800 psi) and the LNER No. 10000 "Hush-Hush" (at 450 psi) that were both high-pressure steam locomotives though those two were in the U.K, the Swiss Eb 3/5 could operate at a boiler pressure of 850 psi.
Story[]
In 1926, the SLM decided to build a high-pressure locomotive with a water-tube boiler on its own account. Before the locomotive was built, the boiler and the steam engine were tested on a test stand for a year. After the locomotive was completed in November 1927, track testing began. The locomotive was then put into regular service on the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), where it was compared to the B 3/4 . The results showed that the high-pressure steam locomotive used 35 to 40% less coal and half the water compared to a conventional locomotive. Test drives were also carried out in Austria and France.
