The Statens Järnvägar, SJ Å 1474 Turbinlok was a steam turbine locomotive built for Statens Järnvägar of Sweden.
The Design[]
It was built with a boiler wagon with a steam boiler as well as the cab, plus a machine wagon with a steam turbine in it. The locomotive had a condenser in the tender but, the tender contains the condenser and water, the coal was apparently kept in the front next to the boiler.
As the water dissipates, the driving wheels get less weight on them, logistically the boiler in the front would always have a significant weight on it unless the condenser in the tender was that heavy.
Construction and test results[]
The construction of this steam turbine locomotive took five years because it was first ordered in 1922 and wasn't delivered in 1927, and it was discontinued very quickly because it never was reliable at any point, it broke all the time. The technology was overwhelmingly complicated especially by maintenance crews.
Ending[]
It was withdrawn in 1932 and was later scrapped in 1935 at Örebro.
