The C951 (Contract 951) is a Singaporean rapid transit electric multiple unit operated by the Singapore Mass Rapid Transit since December 2013 on the Downtown Line.

History[]

The C951s were produced for use on the Downtown Line and are the first rolling stock to be used on that line; the Downtown Line is the second line operated by SBS Transit and the longest fully-underground MRT line in Singapore. Built by Changchun Bombardier Railway Vehicles (a joint consortium of Bombardier Transportation and CNR Changchun) in Changchun, China, the C951 is the first fully-automated medium capacity heavy rail rolling stock to be used on the SBS Transit network. The first sets entered service on 22 December 2013.

73 sets were initially planned to be produced. An additional order for an additional 15 sets was placed with Bombardier in 2013, bringing the total to 88 sets. 4 more sets were ordered in 2016, bringing the total to 92 sets; the second and third batches are given the designation C951A (Contract 951A).

The trains were refurbished from 2023, replacing the existing route map with a LCD map similar to that of the R151, T251 and refurbished C751A trains. The first set with the new LCD map, 9065, re-entered service on 2 July 2023.

Design[]

Car bodies are constructed of welded aluminum. The sets are equipped with the corporate livery of the Land Transport Authority, featuring a white body with black accents and two accent stripes, one in blue representing the line color of the Downtown Line and another in teal. The Land Transport Authority's logo is emblazoned on the front detrainment door, with the SBS Transit logo situated in front of the first pair of doors on each train; below the SBS Transit logo is text reading "Downtown Line". A yellow LED display at the top left of the train displays the train running number. There is no visual way to determine the difference between the C951s and C951As apart from looking at the train number. The Bombardier logo is affixed to a polished metal part on the cab.

In early artist's impressions created before the operator of the Downtown Line had been decided, a generic livery based on SMRT's "Blackbird" livery was used on the trains to illustrate what they might have looked like if the SMRT Corporation ended up operating the line. While the appearance of the C951s would remain unchanged through these impressions the initial livery featured had the same white background but with a single red accent stripe. No company logo apart from the aforementioned Bombardier logo was present on the front detrainment door.

The interior of the sets features grab handles that match the seat colors of the cars. The sets feature the Train Traveller Information System, a series of LED screens mounted in each car informing passengers of route information, and the Dynamic Route Map Display, a route map with LEDs positioned above each door. In refurbished sets, these are replaced with a newer version of the DRMD, consisting of an ovoid LCD screen. Two large red LED strips positioned above each door flash when the doors are about to close.

The C951s are a type of fully-automated rolling stock on the Singapore rapid transit network. Siemens's Trainguard Sirius CBTC system is used to control the trains. The trains are equipped with Bombardier's MITRAC 1000 IGBT variable frequency drive system; these produce a hissing sound on acceleration.
