The C851E (Contract 851E) is a Singaporean rapid transit electric multiple unit operated by the Singapore Mass Rapid Transit since July 2023 on the North East Line.
History[]
The C851Es were produced for use on the North East Line, produced to further increase the capacity of the line with the projected increase in demand once the Punggol Coast extension opens in 2024. The trains were built from 2021 to 2022 by Alstom at their facilities in Barcelona, Spain. The Land Transport Authority has announced that the trains will be put into service some time in 2023, with an official announcement stating they would enter service on 28 July 2023.
The C851E entered service on 28 July 2023, with set 7089/7090 operating on the North-East Line.
Design[]
Car bodies are constructed of welded aluminum. The sets are equipped with a variation on the corporate livery of the Land Transport Authority, having a white body with a large glossy black band spanning the top half of each car. Emblazoned on the bottom half, separated by the plain white body, is a large band indicating the line the trains serve, which in this case is purple for the North East Line. The SBS Transit logo is branded in white print on the front of each car, just behind the cab, with large Land Transport Authority logos emblazoned on the detrainment doors and the sides of each car.
In terms of appearance, the C851Es have a nearly identical appearance to that of the C851Es purchased for the Circle Line under the same contract, both built around the same time by Alstom. The sets are visually identical to the older C751Cs apart from their liveries.
Both C851Es and C751Cs have visually similar interiors, featuring both the Visual Passenger Information System LED displays and the Dynamic Route Map Displays, with their only discernible difference being a faster-scrolling passenger information system with slightly more vibrant colors. The C851Es have been observed to feature different messages in their passenger information systems, reading "Please stand clear of doors." as opposed to "Doors are closing" on the rest of the North East Line fleet. Unlike the C751Cs, the C851Es can display multiple colors on their VPIS systems, showing green in most cases and a light orange for the door closing announcement. The VPIS systems have since been changed to read the standard "Doors are closing" message. The Alstom logo is not present below the doors, unlike on the C751Cs.
All C851Es feature a loud beeping tone informing passengers of the train doors closing independent of the on-train announcements, with a yellow beacon on the top of the doors turning on to inform passengers of the closing doors, as well as a siren sound effect to warn passengers at terminal stations that the train is about to depart.
Specifications[]
Onboard recording
The C851Es are a type of fully-automated rolling stock on the Singapore rapid transit network. Alstom's URBALIS 300 CBTC system is used to control the trains. The trains are equipped with Alstom's Opt-ONiX IGBT variable frequency drive system. The Opt-ONiX system was developed specifically by Alstom for the Chinese market. The systems used are identical, if not very similar, to what is used on the C751C.
Unlike most trains on the MRT, the C851E uses a pantograph to collect power as opposed to collector shoes. The trains are fitted with condition monitoring systems to allow them to gather data from their onboard equipment, allowing maintenance crews to carry out predictive maintenance when required. This equipment is located on the undercarriage of one of the cab cars, with two lights (one red, one beige) shining when the equipment is active.
