The C751A (Contract 751A) is a Singaporean rapid transit electric multiple unit operated by the Singapore Mass Rapid Transit since June 2003 on the North East Line.

History[]

The C751As were produced for use on the North East Line and are the first rolling stock to be used on that line; the North East Line is notable as being the world's first fully-automated heavy rail system. Built by Alstom in Valenciennes, France, the C751A is the first fully-automated heavy rail rolling stock to be used on the Singapore rapid transit network.

The sets were refurbished starting 2019 by CRRC Nanjing Puzhen, giving the sets interior upgrades. Refurbishment is slated to be completed by 2026.

Design[]

Car bodies are constructed of welded aluminum. The sets are equipped with the first corporate livery of SBS Transit, featuring a white body with black accents and two purple and orange stripes. The SBS Transit logo is emblazoned on the front detrainment door. A warm orange LED display at the top left of the train displays the train running number. No changes were made to the sets's livery apart from the addition of the Land Transport Authority logo on the sides of cars and on the detrainment doors.

Unrefurbished C751As feature two-tone seats, with a purplish blue body with beige accents. Their interiors featured a largely beige and ivory paintscheme. C751As, when new, had square LCD screens on their interiors displaying station information; these have since been turned off due to low demand although they have come on on rare occasions since. As with all active MRT trains at the time, the C751A's route map was a large sticker; these have been replaced with successive updates to the rail network. The trains feature the Visual Passenger Information System, a series of LED displays in each car informing passengers of route information. The VPIS can display olive, orange or red-colored text.

With the refurbishments of the C751As, their interiors were given a significant overhaul. Now featuring a gray and white color scheme, the sets feature new grab handles and new seats with purple coloration; reserved seats are different in lavender purple color. The route maps are replaced with full-color rectangular LCD displays which show advertisements while the older LCD displays were removed. Perch seats were also added in some cars.

Notably, the C751As feature a "clock display" on their VPIS systems. This display informs passengers of the time and date; this display is usually only turned on at terminal stations, although the displays used to be switched to the "clock display" after stopping at every station. All C751As feature a loud beeping tone informing passengers of the train doors closing independent of the on-train announcements, with a yellow beacon on the top of the doors turning on to inform passengers of the closing doors, as well as a siren sound effect to warn passengers at terminal stations that the train is about to depart.

Onboard recording

The C751As are the first fully-automated rolling stock on the Singapore rapid transit network. Alstom's URBALIS 300 CBTC system is used to control the trains. The trains are equipped with Alstom's ONiX 1500 IGBT variable frequency drive system; these produce a wailing sound on acceleration.

Unlike most trains on the MRT, the C751A uses a pantograph to collect power as opposed to collector shoes.
