D&RGW No. 499 is K-37 class 2-8-2 "Mikado" type narrow gauge steam locomotive built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works of Philadelphia, PA in 1902 for the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad (D&RG), later known as the Denver & Rio Grande Narrow Gauge Railroad (D&RGW), originally as a standard gauge class 190. It was later rebuilt into a narrow gauge 2-8-2 by the D&RGW's Burnham Shops in 1930 and reclassified as a K-37. It was used in mostly freight service on the D&RGW narrow gauge system until being retired in 1970.
In 1981, it went to the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad (D&SNG) in Durango, CO, but was never restored to operating condition. In May 1999, it was traded to the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park for static display in exchange for class K-36 locomotive No. 486 (which is currently on temporary display in the D&SNG roundhouse museum awaiting an upcoming overhaul and conversion to burn oil instead of coal). Today, it is in Mint Condition wearing a snow plow and the last of the 8 surviving D&RGW class K-37 locomotives.
