An example of a reversing handle as used on a steam locomotive.

A reversing handle or reverser handle is a hand lever found on a railroad locomotive that is used to determine the direction of travel.

When the reversing handle is in the forward or reverse position, the locomotive will move in the indicated direction when the throttle is opened.

Removing the reversing handle from the control stand in the neutral position locks the throttle controller, effectively disabling the locomotive.

Trivia[]

  • The reversing handle usually has three setting positions: Forward, Reverse, and Neutral.
  • Occasionally, a different lever known as the Johnson bar is used to fulfill the same purpose.
