Typhoon is a green 4-6-2 tender steam locomotive.

History[]

Typhoon was built in 1927 by the Davey Paxman company with three-cylinders for increased speed. Before being delivered to the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch railway, Typhoon posed with Flying Scotsman for a publicity shoot and arrived at the railway on the 19th of May in 1927. Typhoon and it's sibling Hurricane both failed with three-cylinders and so had them converted to two-cylinders in 1935/36.[1][2][3][4][5]

On the 22nd of April in 1947, Typhoon collided into a large tractor splitting the tractor in half and causing Typhoon to come to rest on it's side, however Typhoon was not badly damaged and continued in service later in the month. The driver of the tractor made no attempt to warn or tell anyone as the tractors wheels became stuck on the rails. On the 16th of July in 1952, Typhoon was in another collision head-on with it's sibling, Hurricane which had overrun Britannia Points where it was to receive a token up the line.[1][2][3][4][5]

In August 1974, Typhoon collided with a car at Botolph's crossing with no-one being badly injured. The next year on the 28th of August in 1975, Typhoon collided with yet another car at St. Mary's crossing as the driver of the car had attempted to race the train to the crossing, the passenger had to be cut free but was not badly injured. Typhoon was withdrawn from service in 2018 and after being on display at the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway for a year or so, is currently at the Vale of Rheidol railway under overhaul.[1][2][3][4][5]
