Locomotive Wiki

The Bug is a brown 0-4-0 side tank tender steam locomotive.

History[]

The Bug was built in 1926 by Krauss of Munich, Germany for the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch railway in Kent, United Kingdom. The Bug was designed to aid in the construction of the line and the extension to Dungeness. But after the railway opened The Bug saw little service and so was sold to a showman in Blackpool in Lancashire who sold The Bug to the Belle Vue Park Railway.[1][2][3][4][5]

On this railway it was renamed Jean and operated until 1950 when the railway closed and the locomotive was sold for scrap. It lay under a pile of scrap until 1972 when it was repatriated by Sir William McAlpine. In 1974, The Bug was restored to operational status by Dick Cushing being painted in Southern Green, it was used to promote the railway operating at exhibitions. The Bug is not in service, awaiting overhaul and is painted in Brighton Umber (Improved Engine Green) and uses a custom RH&DR whistle.[1][2][3][4][5]
