Southern Maid is a green 4-6-2 tender steam locomotive.

History[]

Southern Maid was built by Davey Paxman in 1926 originally under the name of Southern Chief which was changed shortly before No.3 entered service on the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch railway being delivered on the 20th of April in 1927. On the 16th of May in 1946, Southern Maid fell into a drainage canal following a collision with a truck in which the driver of the truck was killed and the engine driver seriously injured.[1][2][3][4][5]

Southern Maid was extensively damaged and required major repairs following it's recovery. Smoke deflectors were added in 1955, these were removed in 1971. Southern Maid is currently out of service after having failed due to a broken injector during the 2024 gala, and is now awaiting overhaul. It used an Isle of Wight Hooter whistle and is painted into the railways own green livery which resembles SE&CR Green but differs slightly.[1][2][3][4][5]

Trivia[]

  • Southern Maid has carried over five different liveries in it's operational life.
