Doctor Syn is a black 4-6-2 tender steam locomotive.

History[]

Doctor. Syn was built in 1931 by the Yorkshire Engine company, though it had already been partially constructed by the Davey Paxman company. It was originally named Black Prince until 1948 when No.9 (at that time named Doctor Syn) was renamed to Winston Churchill to be displayed in Canada the founder and director of the railway Captain Howey renamed No.10 to Doctor Syn which is the name of a fictional local hero that is found in smuggling stories. Doctor Syn is currently in service in a Black and Gold livery, she carries an LNER A4 chime whistle from the locomotive 4491 "Commonwealth of Austrailia".[1][2][3][4][5]

Trivia[]

  • Doctor. Syn was fitted with a raised and copper-capped funnel, raised domes, bell and a headlight to elaborate on the popular locomotives' American-style appearance.
  • Doctor. Syn has not had any major accidents on the railway in it's operational career thus far.
  • The name "Black Prince" was later used on the railways No.11.
  • Doctor. Syn's whistle is from an LNER A4 class No.4491 "Commonwealth of Australia".
  • According to a photo supplied to the Yorkshire Engine Co. for reference, both Doctor. Syn and Winston Churchill were intended to resemble Canadian Pacific Railway G3 class No. 2300, but Henry Greenly destroyed the original plans of the engines causing their resultant appearances.
