The Prussian G 8.1 Class (later DRB 55-2501 to 2857 and 2861 to 5622), is a class of 0-8-0 Eightwheeler steam engine class, built to ensure goods trains for the Königlich Preussische Eisenbahn-Verwaltung (K.P.E.V.).

Description[]

The G 8.1s, were 2-cylinders single expansion locomotives, equipped with a Schmidt superheater. They have four driving wheels, having a diameter of 1,34m (4.4ft). The chassis, similar to the one of the G 8s, had side rails made of sheet measuring 30mm (1.1in) thick. The movement of the driving wheels is driven by a Heusinger valve gear.

The locomotives have a Crampton-type firegrate, of an area of 28.2m² (8.6ft²), which heats a boiler stamped at 14 bars (232.06 psi), the whole offering a total heating surface of 144,38m² (1,554ft²). They were fitted with a fixed exhaust, and a smaller and chunckier funnel, and chimney raise under the DRG. The regulator dome, smaller but chunckier than the one of the G 8, was located on the second ferrule of the locomotive, and was framed by two square-shaped sandpits. They were braking with a Knorr set or a Westhinghouse set, It would be sometimes replaced, depending the railway, such as the PLM which replaced Its G 8.1s' original air-compressed pump by a PLM-type set.

Tenders[]

The engines were coupled to special tenders, designed for them. It was a three-axles tender, that can carry 16 m3 (3,522.2 UK Gal; 4,226.7 US Gal) of water and 7t (6.88 UK t; 7.7 US t) of coal.

In France they would be registered as:

  • AL 5001 to 5372, then SNCF 1-16.C.1 to 372;
  • EST 4240 to 4396, then SNCF 1-16.C.440 à 596.

the AL and Est railways would coupled them to other tenders. Thus Est Nos. 4397 and 4398 were coupled to bogie tenders that could contain 21.5m3 (4.733 UK Gal; 5,683 US Gal) of water et 5t (5 UK t; 5.5 US t) of coal, and would be registered as EST 4397 and 4398, then SNCF 1-21.D.397 and 398.

The AL would coupled 10 G 8.1s with bogie tenders 16m3 (3.522 UK Gal; 4,226 US Gal) of water et 5.6t (5.51 UK t; 6.1 US t) of coal, coming from the G 5s. They would received the numbers SNCF 1-16.A.1 to 372. The AL G 8.1s would also be coupled to tenders, with a cappacity of 18m3 (3,962 UK Gal; 4,755 US Gal) of water et 5t (5 UK t; 5.5 US t) of coal, and would be registered as SNCF 1-18.A.1 to 372. And some locomotive would inherited the bogie tenders from the class G 11, after rebuilt as 2-10-2 tank locomotives, they could contain 18m3 (3,962 UK Gal; 4,755 US Gal) of water, and tenders from the P 8s, that carried 31m3 (6,824 UK Gal; 8,189 US Gal).
