Portland and Western No. 1853 (formerly known as Southern Pacific No. 1532) nicknamed "Forest Grove" is an EMD SD9m (formerly an EMD SD7R) that was built by the Electro-Motive Division (EMD) originally for the Southern Pacific Railroad in January 1955.

History[]

Portland and Western No. 1853 was constructed in January 1955 and was delivered to the Southern Pacific Railroad that same year in 1955.

Upon being delivered in 1955, it was originally numbered by the Southern Pacific as #5288, but would later be renumbered to #2709, it would eventually be renumbered again to 1402 until being rebuilt into an EMD SD7R and renumbered to its final number of 1532.

It remained in service on the Southern Pacific until it would be retired from service and has survived into preservation, it was later rebuilt into an EMD SD9M and was donated to the Portland and Western Railroad (PNWR) where it was renumbered by the PNWR as #1853 and given the nickname "Forest Grove".

Sometime before 2009, 1853 collided with a string of railcars in Sheridan and suffered a bent frame. PNWRs shop crews tried to fix the locomotive, however the damage was too bad to save it. It was scrapped by 2009.
