The Pennsylvania Railroad Class V1 was a Triplex steam turbine that was supposed to be built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as well as Westinghouse; it's streamlining was going to be designed by Raymond Lowey

Plans for it[]

The Pennsylvania Railroad Class V1 was supposed to be a mechanical drive steam turbine locomotive (Much like the Pennsylvania Railroad Class S2 which was built in 1944) The V1 was a Triplex steam turbine that was supposed to be built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as well as Westinghouse in the 1940s; it's streamlining was going to be designed by famed industrial designer Raymond Lowey, The V1 Triplex Steam Turbine was also going to have a Bose-drive between the Turbine and the common-shafted axles. The Boiler was supposed to be a modified Q2, Turned around with the great drop down over the second lead truck which can be compared to Chesapeake & Ohio's M-1 Steam Turbine, but the Pennsylvania Railroad Class V1 Triplex Steam Turbine was never built at all.

Why wasn't it built?[]

The Reasons to why it was never built was because of the Pennsylvania Railroad Class S2's poor steaming in the case of the boiler pressure dropping due to the turbines on it consuming the steam/fuel like crazy. Steam Turbine Locomotives weren't efficient at low speeds but they are incredible at high speeds. Plus it was the 1940s, Diesels were rapidly taking over steam locomotives in America, the idea/notion of investing another steam turbine wasn't a good idea, so the Pennsylvania Railroad had wounded buying a bunch of diesels from EMD as did pretty much every other Railway.
