Pennsylvania Railroad H6sb

The class H6b was a class of 2-8-0 steam locomotives that were built for the Pennsylvania Railroad. The H6b was among the first freight locomotive designs to use Walschaerts valve gear on the Pennsy as it was also used on several different railroads and was the third and final order of H6 locomotives built new for the PRR prior to 1914.

History and Development[]

After the Success of many H6a's in service by the spring of 1905, the Pennsylvania Railroad decided to further develop the H6 design to a higher advantage. In the beginning of the decade during 1904, the PRR tested a new French-Imported 4-4-2 Atlantic with a Belpaire boiler with Walschaerts valve gear for experimental passenger service. Known as the De Glehn Compound, it was undersized and unsuccessful for the service it was intended for as though the Pennsy decided to adapt the better functioning outside mounted Walschaerts valve gear. As the Pennsylvania Railroad designers were looking for further ways to develop the H6a into a better free-rolling version, the H6b was developed from the existing H6a with the use of Walschaerts piston valves being able to mount larger cylinders. The PRR with new trackage in some areas along with high grade routes like Horseshoe curve needed a lot of them, so the Baldwin Locomotive Works of Philadelphia had the honor to build the first H-6b #2749 was the first, constructed around the Autumn of 1905. These locomotives were built with 22" x 28" cylinders with Stephenson valve gear driving 56" drivers. The Boiler was measured with a maximum diameter of 76" with a higher pressure of 205 Lbs. PSI producing the same starting T.E. as the other previous subclasses at 42,168 Lbs. tractive effort. With the ever-increasing demands of the PRR's Freight Traffic, few builders made batches of them, starting with Baldwin, along with the Pennsy's Juniata Shops, and the Pittsburgh Plant of the American Locomotive Company. Over several years there was a large quantity produced between 1905-1913 as about six hundred and five units were built. At the time as it was the First Freight design to use the modern valve gear on the Pennsy, the H6b's became the premier freight power on the Pennsy's numerous Coal hauling lines until the early 1910s. Not too long after the H6b's began production in 1905, the Pennsylvania Railroad received two Mammoth-like 2-8-0 experimental freight locomotives from the American Locomotive Company designated as the H28s, although not as liked as other Pennsy power in use and on Trial Runs, these two locomotives inspired the Pennsy to Build a larger and more powerful 2-8-0 Consolidation type after 1906 introducing the mighty H8 and H9 classes. With these new designs entering production by 1907, this sealed the overall production fate of the H6 class although the last two were constructed as late as 1913 prior to the Introduction of the L1 class Mikado's following in 1914.

Service, Rebuilds and Withdraw[]

All H6b locomotives remained present in several services throughout the 1920s and 1930s commonly found in various sites in Pennsylvania, a chunk was rebuilt and modified to fit the railroad's certain Needs. After the end of the early 1920s the H6b had already replaced the earlier H6 and a majority of the H6a locomotives as the H6b's were handling freights better and with less coal compared to they're older siblings. Starting in the mid 1920s the railroad began retiring them in favor of better and bigger engines like the H8, H9, and H10 classes and beyond as there were already more locomotives than what was already needed. However, some were sold to other railroads like the Long Island or other buyers such as the Pennsylvania, Reading and Seashore Lines. The Biggest changes of the H6sb locomotives were also the different styles of tenders used. Many of these locomotives were rebuilt with a Superheater, becoming H6sb's with the first Successful rebuild taking place in 1913 when the very last of the H6b's were built. Even as some were rebuilt with larger piston valves by boring out the Cylinder by one inch making 23" x 28" pistons than the original 22" but decreasing the Boiler pressure to 195 from 205 Lbs. Several of the H6a and H6sa's received Walschaerts valve gear rebuilding they're old Stephenson mounted frames becoming H6b's. The rest of the original H6b's remained unchanged as surplus until retirement as all Saturated-Steam powered H6b's were All mainly scrapped by 1939. The PRR progressed with converting most of the H6b power into five hundred and sixty-seven rebuilt H6sb's as only thirty-eight remained Saturated. Many were converted to switchers and in later years also gained Power reversers for the ease of Switching work. Many had become so modified with different piping arrangements or tenders that out of a massive heard of hundreds to a thousand locomotives, no two engines looked exactly the same. Notably, thirty units as H6sb's were sold to China for use on their railway lines where they eventually emerged into the China Railways as the KD10 Class after the War. As many were scrapped by 1941, the surplus units were pulled back to work after the Attack on Pearl Harbor to serve the Pennsy in the War Effort where they took many Roles. As said by Fireman crews during the day, the H6sb's were considered to be another amongst the finest Freight hauling Steam Locomotives the railroad ever owned as only very few others received such praise like the long and fast M1 Mountains and L1 Mikado's. As many have had fine topped performance, there was still about one hundred and seventeen active units on the roster by January 1947 and several years later into 1954, only two engines were still in service as numbers #2846 and #3110. H6sb #2846 made the last run of any H6 locomotive in general taking place in 1955 whereas it was Retired from active service in 1956. In October 1957 was when all regular Commercial Steam operations ended on the Pennsylvania Railroad as #2846 was saved from Scrap and was added to the Pennsy's Historical Steam Collection in Northumberland, PA. On Loan to Strasburg in August 1969, the Penn Central off the Pennsy repainted and polished up #2846 where it was Donated for Display where several years later it joined the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania where it remains Today on static display.
