The class H6a was a class of 2-8-0 steam locomotives that were built for the Pennsylvania Railroad. The H6a was unique for being a freight design used on several different railroads and holds the distinction for being the most numerous single class of Pennsylvania Railroad Steam Locomotives.
History and Development[]
Following the developments of the earlier H6 along with the major boiler problems, the Pennsylvania was in need of a more free-steaming steam locomotive type to fulfill heavy demands of the coming century. The premier bulk of freight engines at the time were the H1, H3, and H6 classes and some early G1 and G2 class Ten Wheelers. With freight trains heavier the PRR followed suit as redeveloping another version of the H6 as a separate subclass instead of developing another whole new Consolidation. In 1901 the PRR tested new 4-4-2 Atlantic's with a wider-belpaire firebox that was able to widen its burning space over its drive wheels and became an instant success that the Pennsy developed the H6a with this wider and better performing firebox to replace the poor-firing H6 class. The PRR with new trackage in some areas along with high grade routes like Horseshoe curve needed a lot of them, so the Baldwin Locomotive Works of Philadelphia had the honor to build the first H-6 with a wide firebox over the last drive axle, the H6a! #1890 was the first, constructed after June 1901 the firebox was shortened from 130" x 40" (H6) to 107" x 60" (H6a) with wider burning space improving its air combustion building steam better. These locomotives were built with 22" x 28" cylinders with Stephenson valve gear driving 56" drivers. The Boiler was measured with a maximum diameter of 76" with a higher pressure of 205 Lbs. PSI producing an impressive 42,168 Lbs. tractive effort making the H6a a few thousand pounds heavier. With the ever-increasing demands of the PRR's Freight Traffic, four major builders made batches of them, starting with Baldwin, along with the Pennsy's Juniata Shops, and several plants of the American Locomotive Company. Over several years the four produced between 1901-1905 about around 1,000+ units were built as at least 1,017 were Baldwin built. They along with the H6b's became the premier freight power on the Pennsy's numerous Coal hauling lines until the early 1910s. In May 1904, a locomotive test plant was constructed by the Pennsylvania Railroad for the Louisiana purchase expedition in St. Louis, as PRR #1499 an H-6a was selected to be tested for performance at the Expedition proving the engine's performance figures.
Service, Rebuilds and Withdraw[]
All H6a locomotives remained present in several services throughout the 1920s and 1930s commonly found in various sites in Pennsylvania, a chunk was rebuilt as almost all of them were never changed barely. After the end of the early 1920s the H6a had already replaced the 1899 H6 locomotives as the H6a's and H6b's were handling freights better and with less coal compared to they're older siblings. Starting in the early 1920s the railroad began retiring them in favor of better and bigger engines like the H8, H9, and H10 classes and beyond as there was already more locomotives than what was already needed. However, some were sold to other railroads like the Long Island or other buyers. About 142 of these locomotives were rebuilt with a Superheater, becoming H6sa's. Even as four H6a's #5136, #5161, #5169, and #5123 were rebuilt with larger piston valves receiving Walscherts valve gear rebuilding they're old Stephenson mounted frames becoming H6b's. The rest of the original H6a's remained unchanged as surplus until retirement. Many were converted to switchers and in later years became so modified with different piping arrangements or tenders that out of a massive heard of hundreds to a thousand locomotives, no two engines looked exactly the same. Most were retired in the early 1930s not too long as the H6's were retired almost a decade before as the Depression came along but the last of the H6a's were replaced in favor of the more efficient H6sb's and other locomotives before 1941. None were preserved.
Baltimore and Ohio Copies[]
In 1901 as the Pennsylvania Railroad had controlled the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad at the time, the Vice President of the Pennsy became the President of the Baltimore and Ohio, with the B&O needing other good steaming locomotives during a financial crisis, the Pennsy H6a design was selected for production. Between 1901-1905, 197 copies of the H6a design were built for the Baltimore and Ohio in numerous numberings. The American Locomotive Company's Rogers, Pittsburgh, and Richmond Plants constructed them originally being the I-7 Class. As known to be called on the B&O as the E-24 Class, in 1905 twenty-four were converted to 0-8-0 locomotives, rebuilding them back to freight 2-8-0s between 1912-1915. Another time in the mid 1920s eighty-six locomotives were converted to 0-8-0 switchers designated as L-1 and L-1a classes. Between 1929 and 1930 the B&O tooled with them more as it converted thirty-one E-24s into E-24as with the addition of new piston valves, larger pistons, and rebuilding their frames with Walscherts valve gear replacing the old Stephenson valve gear. Only one unchanged E-24 was still active on the roster by early 1941 and was written off the books in 1947 as the rest of the remaining L-1, L-1a and E-24a classes were all gone by 1960.

Trivia[]
- The H6a class were another one of the last freight steam designs to use Stephenson valve gear as it was later on replaced by the efficient Walscherts type.
- Although stated "There was more than enough to come around" the H6 class is the second most proflic class of American 2-8-0s, the most being the USATC S-160 Class.
