The Pennsylvania Railroad Class H4 were a series of early Heavy 2-8-0 Consolidations built for and by the Pennsylvania Railroad and it's Lines West subsidiaries for freight service at the very end of the Nineteenth Century where highly employed as over a hundred were built.
Design and History[]
In 1896, the Pennsylvania's H3 class (Originally Class R) along with the F class Moguls were the Prime heavy freight locomotives on the Pennsylvania system as the Pennsy was the Largest Railroad company in the World. With the Pennsy desperate for newer and more efficient engine power development after the Panic of 1893, the railroad designed the newer larger version of a Consolidation with a larger boiler and cylinders taking after the older H3 design introduced in 1885. Just like the previous design, the new H4 series used the trademark Narrow-Belpaire Firebox for improved steaming capacities. Many being built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works and other builders, the H4 was introduced in 1897 with large 22" x 28" cylinders which were larger than most, a capacity of 185 Lbs. PSI. with a bigger 69 1/2" - 71" Boiler. This design further improved the Consolidation as it had a little over 25% more Tractive Effort at a total of 38,055 Lbs. which was considered Impressive for its Time. Having a better firing firebox with a 9' 8 1/2" burning grate, they were built mainly for its Lines West. The new locomotives could haul very heavy Coal/Freight Trains at slow speeds which they were intended for. One hundred and five units were built in total by Baldwin, Pittsburgh Works, and PRR's Juniata Shops between 1897 until 1902. However the design has two slightly different Boiler layouts, some were built with many 2" Fire-tubes having more heating surface than those that were built with slightly fewer 2 1/4" Tubes.

Trivia[]
- After World War I with such a surplus of Consolidations being outdated by much larger Mainline Freight Locomotives, is amongst the main reasons why these locomotives and other similar engines were Retired after barely twenty years of service, as evidenced that the last one to meet the Cutter's Torch was in early 1927.
- Despite the H4's being useful for even small Industrial companies, the PRR never sold any of them.
- As the H4's were an older design as not being that much older than the newer H6's, the Pennsy didn't consider these units worth Rebuilding.
