The Pennsylvania Railroad G5s were a class of 4-6-0 "Ten-Wheelers" type tender steam locomotives that were constructed between the years of 1923 and 1925 by the Juniata Shops (later Altoona Works) at Altoona, PA. 90 of these locomotives were originally built for the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) with the main purpose of hauling commuter trains to larger city destinations.

Pittsburgh PA. was one of the heavy concentrations of G5's. Others saw service on Lines West in and around Chicago and Ft Wayne and others in the Eastern Divisions at Philadelphia, PA and NJ. These were the most powerful 4-6-0 locomotives built. From when they were constructed and to the very end, very little was changed or altered about them.

Due to their success, the PRR Shops constructed an additional 31 G5s's from 1924-1929, numbered 20-50 for one of their subsidiaries, the Long Island Railroad (LIRR). These locomotives would run in revenue service until the mid-1950s when the railways were starting to transition towards diesel power.

Preservation[]

Of the 121 members that were built only three examples of the class survived into preservation. One from the PRR and two from the LIRR.
