PRR A4

PRR A4 #757 in service during 1925 at an unknown location. This Engine was built by Juniata in 1907 and Scrapped in October 1928.

The A4s were a class of 0-4-0 switcher steam locomotives built by Altoona Works for the Pennsylvania Railroad from 1906 to 1913. They had a Belpaire firebox and 50" drivers. They were Built with clerestory roofs on they're cabs and with kerosene lamps and Stephenson valve gear, making them seem different and slightly bigger than the previous A3 Class. The A4 was the basis of the more largely improved A5s introduced in 1916. After production ended in 1913, the PRR built at least 65 or so locomotives of this kind. The PRR was keen on the Small 0-4-0 wheel arrangement because of tight trackage curves in and out of city streets where larger engines couldn't fit on. By the 1930s the A4 class was largely obsolete as the more powerful A5s and A6 Boxcabs took they're place on the roster, with A4 #826 being among the last to be Scrapped as late as June 1936. None survived into Preservation.
