Pennsylvania Railroad No. 7048 is an EMD GP9 that was built by the Electro-Motive Division for the Pennsylvania Railroad in December 1955.
History[]
Construction and delivery[]
Pennsylvania Railroad No. 7048 was constructed by the Electro-Motive Division in December 1955 and was delivered to the Pennsylvania Railroad the same year in 1955. It was built to replace the steam locomotives that the Pennsylvania Railroad had in service in their lines.
It had lasted into the days of the Penn Central merger where it retained its number #7048. When Penn Central entered bankruptcy and the freight lines that were operated by Penn Central were taken over by Conrail.
Preservation[]
It was retired from service and had survived into preservation. It was moved to the Horseshoe Curve in Altoona, Pennsylvania where it was placed on static display where Pennsylvania Railroad Class K4 No. 1361 had been previously displayed so that PRR K4 No. 1361 could be removed from display in order for that locomotive to be restored back to working order.
No. 7048 was eventually cosmetically restored back to its Pennsylvania Railroad livery where it sat at.
As of today, No. 7048 currently sits on static display at the Horseshoe Curve in Altoona, Pennsylvania where it is filmed and/or photographed by the public following a cosmetic restoration to the locomotive back in 2021.
