Pennsylvania Railroad No. 4846 was a Pennsylvania Railroad Class GG1 electric locomotive that was built by the Pennsylvania Railroad themselves at their own Altoona Works in May 1935.

History[]

Pennsylvania Railroad No. 4846 was constructed May 1935 by the Pennsylvania Railroad themselves at their own Altoona Works, and it entered service on the Pennsylvania Railroad that same year in 1935.

It was eventually involved in a wreck and was retired along with another three GG1 locomotives, those being Nos. 4804, 4831 and 4847 that would be retired before the Pennsylvania Railroad merged with the New York Central Railroad to form the Penn Central Transportation Company (Penn Central). While GG1 Locomotives Nos. 4804, 4831 and 4847 were cut up for scrap, most of No. 4846 was salvaged and rebuilt into for one of the most unlikely purposes, which was a snow melter.

The way this had occurred was that the 4846 was split in half and although it kept everything on one side including its pantograph, its left side was extended to make room for the snow melter, which required two air vents on top of each other instead of one, with the melter forming a plow right after the six axles where the steam generator used to be at and above it would be a flat yellow wall with a single headlight and handlebar. The cab was also modified on the right to be extended, but not on the left side, as the newly rebuilt maintenance vehicle was never given a number nor a designated paint scheme and as a result, it retained its Penn Central colors but the Penn Central logo was removed.

4846 continued to move under its own power while operating under the wire at the Wilmington Shops to clear snow and ice that was on tracks and switches. As well as being pushed by other locomotives after numerous minor derailments while moving under its own power due to being unbalanced.

Sadly, No. 4846 didn't last for very long and it was subsequently scrapped in August 1983.
