Revenue Service and Retirement[]

Not very much was known of #3397's operating history, but as it was completed in April 1912, the sole unit was assigned road number #3397 and placed in service at the PRR Pitcairn yard in Pitcairn, Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh. A subsequent class, the CC2s, was constructed beginning in 1919 after the tests conducted with this locomotive. When the ten CC2s locomotives were constructed by the Baldwin Locomotive Works, they became most ideal for the Yard hump services as they performed better with Higher tractive effort than the older Prototype it inspired. As years later, the Pennsy was finding little advantage to articulated steam locomotives and the earlier Mallets like #3397 were replaced by regular rigid-frame heavy power like the I1sa Decapods. Not too long into the early stages of the Great Depression, the PRR Retired the locomotive from full Service in March 1931 where it was also Scrapped that same Year.

Trivia[]

  • PRR #3397 was the Longest lived of the three of the Experimental Articulated Steam Locomotives the Pennsy constructed in the 1910's, as it ended service after nearly Nineteen years of Service.
  • The Boiler used for the locomotive was rather undersized for the engine's wheelbases, as the Boiler was identified to be 41' 8.56" in length although for the era it was average sized.
